Homosassa History

Homosassa is derived from a Seminole Indian name meaning either “river of fishes” or “pepper ridge”.

In 1851, David Levy Yulee established a 5,000-section of land (20 km2) sugar estate on the Homosassa River, near the flow town of Homosassa. The estate was worked by roughly 1,000 slaves, however Yulee was a truant proprietor, investing the greater part of his energy in Fernandina. Among the harvests raised were sugar stick, cotton, and citrus. The Yulee Groves were one of the first in Florida to develop sweet oranges sprouted from harsh orange stock. The plant, which was steam-driven, worked from 1851 to 1864 and delivered sugar, syrup, and molasses, the remainder of which was essential for the rum-production process. Later the Civil War ended in 1865, Yulee was detained, the slaves were liberated, and the site was deserted. The remaining parts of the manor are protected at the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park.
